Washington Students Deserve The Best Teachers

We all know the quality of the teacher in the classroom makes a tremendous difference on a student’s academic growth. The future of our children depends on having an excellent teacher in every classroom.

That’s why The League of Education Voters are supporting legislation, Senate Bill 5399 andHouse Bill 1609, to allow school districts to keep their most effective teachers when they must layoff or RIF (reduction-in-force) teachers due to budget cuts. Currently, these decisions have been made almost entirely based on seniority or a “last in, first out” basis. Instead, the bills would allow school districts to keep the most effective teachers in the classroom, and make seniority a secondary consideration.

This issue has received vast national attention, from “Waiting for Superman” to a recent court decision in Los Angeles, and now our local media. Read this article in the Vancouver Columbian. Or this one in the Tacoma News Tribune:
Seniority- based teacher layoffs hurt schools, students

We believe this is a very important conversation to have in your communities and with your elected officials.

We urge you to contact your state lawmakers about this legislation so our students will have the most effective educators (click this link to do that easily).
